"Not at all," Calcifer said. "I'm pretty strong myself, and fast. I think we could make a good team together."

“Of course,” Meramon replied with amusement, “I shouldn’t have doubted your resolve. I forgot that you had to deal with that Impmon character, something that’s enough to make anyone strong, at least in patience.”
Even as he was wrapping up his words, the fire-type began to feel something. Maybe it was his anchor to the ground, after all he had been sitting on that rock for so long that it was starting to take on the armrest features of a chair from his sinking into it, but he could feel vibrations running through him. There was no sound to them, which indicated that the source must have been a distance away, but the vibrations were growing in intensity. The whole ground seemed to silently hum to him as if a great earthquake were coming their way, but this didn’t feel like some everyday earthquake to him.
“Do you feel that?” Meramon asked with caution, speaking specifically to Ami, whose blindness might have been enough to sharpen her senses to it.

"Yeah, I do," Ami said. She placed a hand cautiously on the handle of her katana, listening carefully in case sound followed the vibrations.

Meramon rose to his feet, discarded twigs and leaves strewn across the forest floor giving off hisses and pops under heel as they immediately incinerated, his burning blue-white eyes focusing as best they could through the tree line in the general direction where the source of the vibrations running rampant through the earth seemed to be originating from. There was not much more he could do other than wait and see what might happen, but one thing was for certain and that was that the intensity of the tremors was increasing over time. Whatever was the cause was getting closer and fast.
It wasn’t long before a distinctive rumbling sound could be heard, accompanied by a commingling of grunts and roars. Just a short ways away, a triceratops-like digimon with a deep, dark hide burst through the forest cover and passed them over by a slim margin. Then an identical second creature came rampaging out of the tree line, even closer this time so that the fire-type digimon had to strafe to the side to avoid an impact. Not but a few seconds later and the forest was suddenly alive with the passing surge of tank-like monsters, running carelessly and without heed for what might be underfoot.
“It’s a Monochromon stampede!” Meramon announced with sudden alarm as he once again dashed to one side to avoid getting slammed by one of the beasts’ dangerously sharp frontal horns.

Ami immediately moved out of the way, listening as the digimon passed them. "That was close," she said.
"Too close," said Calcifer.

They weren’t out of danger yet. There seemed to be an entire herd running through the forest and crushing anything in their way. It was no wonder that the ground had started to shake while the stampede was still such a great distance away, considering all of the heavy feet passing through. As the number of Monochromon thickened, Meramon knew he’d have to start getting creative if he wanted to pull through this. There was starting to be less and less error margin for avoidance. At one point, when there was no other way, he had to meet one of the charging beasts head on, taking hold of its frontal horn with both hands and using all of his strength to deter it to the side. It was just enough to cause it to stumble around him before its fellow Monochromon forced it forward from behind with their combined momentum.
“You two better get to higher ground!” the fire-type digimon shouted Ami and Calcifer’s way, nodding his chin upwards towards the tree branches making up the canopy above them.
At least with his gesture the Patamon would be sure to know what he was talking about. He couldn’t escape with them without setting the trees on fires and the last thing he needed was to add to their problems with a raging forest fire thrown into the mix, but he wanted to make sure that the human and rookie digimon were safe at least. As he continued to do what he could to keep himself from getting impaled, he considered the swarming digimon, looked into their eyes. This wasn’t their normal behavior; something had scared them into this. They definitely seemed to be running from something, but the question was who and why?

"Right," Calcifer said. "Ami follow my voice."
The girl nodded, following her partner to a tree. She then began climbing upwards, before settling herself on a branch.

Dodging left and right, Meramon’s hot-headed temperament called for him to give them something else to fear, enough so that they would at least be hesitant enough to run around him instead of on top of him. The fact that he would likely cause more harm than good once the sparks started flying and igniting the forest life kept him under control, however, as well as the fact that Ami and her digimon partner were making their way to safety. He remembered what happened to that Impmon’s tamer only a few days past and didn’t want to feel responsible for another two injured, but knew he would if they got trampled by these beasts.
There was a moment suddenly upon him where a trio of Monochromon was practically abreast one another and there was no room to strafe to one side for avoidance. Tensing his leg muscles, he kicked off of the forest floor and leaped over them with relative ease, but he had been worried about doing so and those worries came alive quickly. His back had brushed some of the overhanging branches above him and now the tree they were attached to was starting to alight with flames.
He realized what was happening with a start as he came to a landing and almost didn’t have enough time to avoid another charging Monochromon as it charged through, actually getting thrown to the side a few stumbling steps from a brushing moment with the behemoth. Fortunately, the particular tree was less sturdy than most of the forest vegetation and another passing Monochromon, in its fight to get ahead of the pack, leaped over some of his brethren and while coming in for a landing got its side slammed into the side of the burning tree. The woodland giant came crashing down as its feller quickly joined pace with the rest of the herd, while more Monochromon quickly stomped out the fire with their trampling feet.
“That was a close one,” Meramon muttered to himself, knowing there was little he could do once a fire started to put it out, especially in this sort of situation. A little relief finding its way into this situation, the fire-type quickly slipped between a couple of heavyset body masses barreling through.
Meanwhile, Ami and Calcifer were about to fall into a bind. The tree they had climbed for safe haven was standing firm, but possibly not for long. With every passing Monochromon, their rough armored sides would chip away at the trunk of the tree, especially when they were knocked into it by others of their kind at their opposite sides. Already the bark had been stripped on either side of the trunk and two impressions were starting to form, all the while the tree would shake with every impact from its ground bound assaulters.

"We're gonna after to jump," Ami said. "Well, I will. You can fly. Is there a branch from another tree nearby?"
Calcifer looked, then said. "Yeah, at 11 o'clock." He said. "There's a a gap about two to three feet though."
"I'll make it," Ami said, slowly standing, managing to keep her balance, but just barely. She then carefully ran along the branch and leaped across the gap. Her feet landed on the next branch but she was at an angle that would make her fall. Luckily, Calcifer pushed her back up and she grabbed an overhanging branch and made her stance stead once again. "Thanks, that was close, Cal."

Meramon heard a cracking sound, followed by a loud crash, and realized that it was another tree toppling over. Worse yet, it was in the direction where the human girl and her digimon had taken refuge. When he turned around, sure enough it was the very one that Ami had climbed to get away from the stampeding beasts, now being trampled underfoot by the stomping feet of the charging wave of Monochromon. His heart skipped a beat, once again causing him to taking a glancing blow from one of the triceratops-type digimon from a moment of diminished concentration, but as he came out of a spin caused by the skimming collision his intense burning blue-white gaze locked onto the human girl, being propped up by her digimon and standing on another branch. She must have jumped just in time, the fire-type realized with a breath of relief.
The stampede was beginning to thin, finally, and Meramon was actually able to catch a breather moment here and there where he didn’t have to be in constant motion avoiding lethal horn injury. It was then that he heard something else over the dimming rumble that had already started to pass them by with the majority of the Monochromon. It didn’t sound like the sloppy tremble of heavy footsteps forcing themselves onward, this sounded more like the thundering, assured clap of galloping hoof beats. There was no doubt in his mind that this was something different than the stampeding beasts passing through, he’d also probably bet money, though, that it was still involved in the whole ordeal and perhaps even the cause, the reason those charging Monochromon had had the spark of fear in their eyes.
“Ha, ha, ha, look at them beasties run!” came a jovial boom of a voice, “This is getting to be more fun then I thought it would be!”
Through the tree line could be spotted a new type of digimon, trotting around the remnants of the Monochromon stampede. His lower body had the powerful, lean build of a mighty stallion and had a deep, black coating of fur. The upper portion took a dramatic shift from there to that of hominid-like features. He wore red, flaming armor with a black helmet that had the appearance of a thunderbolt lancing out the front to form a horn. An impressive looking bow was in his hands, an arrow drawn back as he accurately sniped one of the Monochromon in the back-thigh who was trying to break away from the herd and escape. He was certainly the cause of the stampede, forcing these digimon to recklessly charge for whatever the reason could possibly be.
“Not so fast, there, partner!” the Saggitarimon scoffed, drawing another arrow and firing it to pierce the creature’s hide once again as a final deterrent, “Can’t have any of you blokes breaking off on your own, now!”

"Who's that new voice coming from?" Ami asked.
"That's a Saggitarimon," Calcifer said. "He must be the reason those digimon were running."

Meramon studied the Saggitarimon intensely, wondering what the reasoning was behind him forcing the Monochromon herd into a dangerous stampede. It seemed downright cruel on the recipient triceratops-type digimon, not to mention the various passersby like him, Ami, and Calcifer who could get caught up in the lethal wave of armored flesh. In any case he took on a cautionary air for the moment, not sure if this digimon was friend or foe.
As a straggling Monochromon charged through the area, about to ram him with its horn to get him out of the way, he grabbed at the sharp appendage with flaming hands and used all of his strength to send the beast not only skirting around him but also into a tripping spin onto its side. As it staggered to its feet, shock and confusion clouding its mind, it forgot about the Saggitarimon forcing it to run in line and took off on its own. The centaur-type digimon probably would have shot it through of arrows like that other one, except as it was drawing back its bow it noticed the Meramon and his companions and turned his focus onto them.
“What’s this, then?” the centaur asked with agitation, “You three pests are interfering with my fun!”
“And what would that fun of yours entail, exactly?” Meramon asked as his burning eyes followed the horse-man as he came to a casual canter, seeming to circle them like some sort of predatory Seadramon.
“There’s a town over the next ridge, yeah? It lies right beyond this forest.” Saggitarimon explained, sounding almost giddy with excitement, “I’m leading these Monochromon there and after I get them really wound up, I’m setting them loose! Just think how exciting that will be to watch!” He seemed to chuckle boomingly with bubbling anticipation.
Meramon was horrified at this digimon’s concept of fun. All of those Monochromon would flatten a village in rural areas like this and delete any residents unlucky enough not to evacuate in time. Everything and everyone in the path of that stampede would be destroyed, and all for this digimon’s amusement? Truly a terrifying thought and one that sent Meramon’s blood boiling. He had to take extra measures of control just to keep his body temperature low enough not to set the trees around him on fire through the air.

"That's horrible!" Ami said. "Those digimon could easily kill anyone in the way. What if there were baby digimon or something in the village? You should be leading them away, but you're being downright mean!"

“Lead them away?” the Saggitarimon asked, perplexed by her words, “Why would I do that, when I was the one who started the stampede in the first place?” It seemed that thinking about this made his head hurt, because his face quickly took on an angry expression, “You damned nuisance, stop ruining my fun!”
As he prowled around them at a canter, he suddenly took aim and pulled back on the three-pronged arrow that he had previously been pointing towards the fleeing Monochromon that Meramon had physically grounded and scared off, tightening it in his powerful longbow before letting it free from the string with a mighty twang.
He didn’t seem too decent a person, or all that smart to be at it, but his skills in the art of utilizing a bow could not be denied. The arrow flew true and with great force backing its lethal head from the great size of the Saggitariomon’s longbow and the digimon’s own strength. He wasn’t playing around, either, as the projectile was aimed squarely for the young human’s heart. Because of her blindness, either she would have to hear the arrow and gauge what was coming or Patamon would have to warn or protect her. There wasn’t much time, either, as the arrow whizzed through the air.
