"So he's kind of like a mentor?" Ami asked. "I sort of have a mentor myself. My grandfather has been teaching me how to fight and do things independently. He was once a martial arts champion, and pretty well know. He lost his sight several years ago, from old age, but never once let it get to him. He's a great fighter and has taught me everything I know."

“He sounds like a fine human warrior; your training must be in good hands.” Meramon replied, “It seems we both recognize the importance of a teacher. I was still a DemiMeramon when I was taken under my master’s guiding wing. It doesn’t take long before you realize that you can only go so far alone, before you have to search for the wisdom and experience of those who came before you if you wish to progress any farther.”
“Not to mention, if you hadn’t overcome your blindness then you likely wouldn’t have made it as easily to the digital world and we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Meramon chuckled lightly, “Yes, insight and knowledge can only be provided by those who have practice in such things and they are essential to progress in life. Otherwise you’re crawling when you should be hurtling. So, is that why you’re here, a human in the digital world? Did your master send you on a quest too?” It was a long shot, as there were hundreds of reasons why she might have traveled to the digital world, but he only had his own experiences to go by and ever since training years ago this journey was his life.

"No, I don't really know why I came here. I usually explore or train, but...I don't know. I feel like there's something else, waiting for me. I don't know what though. I wasn't sent here, more like...drawn here," Ami said. "Plus I always wonder why I have a digivice. I had it even before I could turn into a digimon, but its never been active. I don't even remember how and when I got it."
"I bet you have a partner somewhere," Calcifer said. "That's what's probably waiting for you. But then again, I could be wrong. Hey, ya got any food?"
Ami chuckled a bit, pulling a granola bar from her pocket. She unwrapped it and held it up. "Here."
"Thanks!"

“Something waiting for you, huh?” Meramon asked with interest, “Sounds a lot like my journey, except you sensed you needed to find this thing you can’t place on your own. I had to be directed on the right path. I wonder if there’s something out there that everyone needs to find and they only know what that something is when they finally have it. I suppose that the only way I’m going to find that out for sure is to finish my master’s mission assigned to me.”
As Meramon watched the young human female and the strangely white-furred Patamon interact, Ami retrieving a granola bar for the little winged digimon, he started noticing how good they seemed together. Before he could put any pieces together beyond that, however, he came to a realization and that happened to be that he was also feeling hungry.
It had been a few days since he had eaten anything, though this was the first sign of hunger he had experienced since his last meal. Filling his stomach would take some time since, even if he were willing to impose on the human girl for sustenance or searched for berries and fruits of the forest, any normal food stuffs would burn away before it ever touched his mouth. He needed to find rock fruit, a specific type of produce that was very resistant to temperatures. It had a fitting name, its skin and meat as hard as stone and unappealing to most other digimon species. It wouldn’t likely be found in a forest like this, however, so he kept his inner cravings to himself. He had gone much longer without a bite on his travels and during endurance exercises from his master during his training years. He could survive some minor hankering.
“The Patamon could be right, though. The few humans I’ve heard about on my travels usually have partners. Though, then again, I’ve never heard of humans turning into digimon before. Maybe it’s only one or the other is how it works, but I’m walking on knowledge I lack here.” Meramon shifted his weight on the rock he sat on, sinking another centimeter or two into the stone slab, “Have you received any hints on why you were drawn here since you arrived? If you have, it’d be a step farther than I’ve come.” This he had to chuckle at, traveling for years and not being a step closer to solving the puzzle his master had left him.

"I don't know, I don't think I've gotten any hints, or else I've missed them completely," Ami said.
Meanwhile, Patamon chowed down on the granola bar, soon seeing an odd flashing signal on the girl's digivice. He was about to asked about it, but unfortunately had quite a short attention span as his mind wandered away from it.

“Well, it’s only a matter of time.” Meramon replied, “At some point we’ll both find what we need to find, I’m sure.”
While speaking, the fire-type digimon noticed the strange gadget the girl had called a digivice, that she had seemed to use to transform into a BlackSalamon, had begun to flash strangely. With a sharper awareness then the Patamon, it would seem, he did not let his eyes roam from the digivice. The blinking was a curiosity to him; he didn’t remember it doing that when she had undergone her change from human to digimon.
“Is that flickering from your digivice normal?” Meramon asked, pointing a flaming finger in Ami’s direction and more specifically the strange device she had with her, though when he began to think about it, it was silly to ask because she would have been blind to it before and was blind to it now.

"I don't know," Ami said. "Maybe. I guess if I meet someone who claims to have a digivice, then I could ask them, but who knows when that will happen."
"Hmm...I think the dot that's not flickering is you, and then the second one which is close to you could be me, or Meramon, we're both near you, so I dunno," the Patamon said.

“Well, it wasn’t doing that earlier,” Meramon pointed out, “and the Patamon was the latest person to get here so it was probably triggered by him. The question is why him? Not to mention why one of them is blinking and one of them isn’t. I might be a digimon, but I have no idea how that gadget you call a digivice works.”

"I don't know," Ami said. "Maybe...its reacting to Calcifer, then."
"So then I guess I'm your partner, then? If you don't mind of course," the white Patamon said.
"No, I don't mind. I'm just surprised, is all," the girl said, pressing a random button. Suddenly, the flickering dot stopped flickering, and a message was heard from the device. "New digimon registered. Patamon. Level: Rookie."
"Guess that answers the question."

“Well, that solves the mystery of the beeping dot, at least.” Meramon announced as he stared quizzically at the digivice from his rock perch, shifting his weight by leaning forward and causing a little more of the rock to give way to the heat of his body’s flames, “ I wonder how those strange contraptions know what digimon is your partner in the first place.”
As he pondered such aloud, he also considered the duo he was with in the forest, a human who could turn into a BlackSalamon and a white-furred Patamon as her partner. From what he could recall of the lines of digivolution for those rookie-types, it made him chuckle on the inside as he considered the pair, quite a mismatch if one thought about it and yet looking so right for each other at the moment. It was certainly a curiosity as to how these tamer-digimon partnerships worked.

"I don't know," Ami said. "But its pretty cool, and saves me the trouble of figuring it out myself," she said, chuckling a bit.

“If there are other humans coming to this world, I wonder if they’ll manage to have the same sort of luck that you seem to have. This is a large place, the digital world; the fact that the two of you ran across one another by chance and were destined for each other is slim on the odds.” Meramon said as he rubbed at his chin in thought with flaming digits, “Hopefully, they’ll all come across digimon meant for them against the same odds. In a new world as dangerous as the digital world it would come in handy to have some guidance and partnership."

"Yeah. I guess if its meant to happen, then it will happen. Some things are just meant to be. My mom told me that when I was little," Ami said.

“Well, at least you now have your digimon partner.” Meramon went on, “Not that you seemed to need one, a human warrior who can also become a digimon, you seemed quite capable of protecting yourself. Yet, it never hurts to have help, I suppose.” The fire digimon didn’t particularly cling to this philosophy for himself, preferring to take on life’s obstacles on his own and grow stronger from the experience, but for others he could see the benefits.
