“Well, all I can do is give you my best wishes.” Meramon continued, “I don’t know what is drawing humans to the digital world, but there must be some reason. Your species seems so frail and unfit for the harsh beauty of our lands at first sight, but you are also… interesting. I have a feeling that you humans have more to you then what can be seen on the surface. Perhaps it’s my warrior’s instinct, but only time will tell.”
“You say that you’re a tamer, some sort of partnership with digimon?” the fire-type smirked with intrigue and humor, “In any case, I wonder what forces that be decided to match you up with a character like Impmon.” He glanced at the rookie-type out of the side of his vision. Their personalities certainly seemed to clash, but at least she seemed to keep him in line, at least to some small degree.

"Probably the universe wanting to make me miserable," Katrin said bitterly. "Or maybe its some kind of punishment. I'm already cursed, but perhaps its just not enough."

“Cursed?” Meramon asked curiously with a sizzling chuckle, not quite understanding what she meant, “You might start to make me feel insulted if you keep saying stuff like that. The digital world hasn’t been that unkind to you has it?”
The fire-type wouldn’t really get insulted if she was pleased with his world, if that’s what she really was implying, but it would be a shame if she didn’t take something good from the experience of stumbling into this digital plane. He was born and raised here and he still found this land a wonderful place to live in, even if it did have its harsh realities. He hoped that the Impmon would live up to his self-promoted hype and protect the human on their journeys so that she wouldn’t have all bad memories of this place.

"Its not that. It has nothing to do with the digital world," Katrin said. She then took a deep breath. "You probably won't believe me, but I...I see ghosts, and hear them. Everyday, all the time, they keep coming to me, haunting me or just trying to get my help when I just want to be a normal. That's why I keep coming to this world, to get away from them. Sometimes I think I might just go mad."

“Ghosts?” Meramon asked, quizzically, “You mean like Bakemon and Soulmon.”
It was a little hard for a digimon to come up with the concept of ghosts beyond the digimon type. After all, when a digimon dies, they’re reborn in the Village of Beginnings unless their data was somehow destroyed when they passed on. Either way, there weren’t many deceased just floating around with an outofbody experience that others couldn’t see. Something struck him as familiar, though, and sounded like another possible meaning of her words.
“Or are you talking about spirits, like those created by the ten legendary warriors?” He heard that digimon could create spirits from their own data, typically if they’re on the verge of deletion, which could live on when they die.

"Neither, though I can see those kind of spirits," Katrin said. "I mean the ghosts of dead humans. Although, I never get to see my dad," she said sadly. "Both of us were in a major car wreck when I was four. He was killed instantly, and I came close. They even pronounced me dead. But five minutes later, I came to. Every since that day, I've been able to see the spirits of dead people."

“That sounds like something special,” Meramon regarded, “being able to speak to your ancestors after they’ve left you and take from their wisdom is a great gift. Yet it seemed it have a steep price tag. I am truly sorry for your loss.”
While he didn’t precisely know what the human girl meant by ‘dad’, he assumed it was something similar to the Swanmon who cared for all of the digimon fresh from their grown eggs, including him, before they were shipped out to all the villages of the digital world. Maybe a ‘dad’ was instead something akin to his master, who acted as a mentor to others and departed wisdom to the younger generation. Perhaps it was both, or maybe both his quandaries were dead off, but by the sound of her voice she cared for this person that she lost and the fire digimon could only relate those feelings to an ancestor by his own experiences.
“So, you’re paired with an Impmon and wandering the digital world, what exactly are your plans now?” the Meramon’s flaming blue-white eyes considered the human intently, “Will you search for a way back to your own world?”

"Its not a gift, its a curse," Katrin said quietly and bitterly, before looking at the fire digimon. "I don't know. I try to find nice, peaceful places but that never works out. Its hard to find peace with this trouble making little pyromaniac here. But I guess I'll take a Trailmon back to my world later, and try to live my life normally, though that's improbable, if not impossible."

“Don’t worry yourself about finding peace in the digital world; it isn’t a very common thing. Locating even these tranquil spots for training purposes takes some effort on my part.” the Meramon gestured to the mountain-enclosed valley of barren earth and slagging rock spires, “If it’s not the hustle of the cities and villages it’s the danger of the wilderness. You’ll enjoy what peace you get better if you learn to let it find you every now and then by its own choice. Until then, learn to enjoy what this world throws at your or learn to fret over what the next moment will bring.”
Meramon chuckled inwardly, his flames rippling softly from the inner sensation. The digital world certainly was a rugged place to live, but it was also a beautiful place full of wonder and adventure. He really didn’t know any other life but this one, though he couldn’t speak for the human. Who knows what her world was like; she seemed to know how to exchange bombardments of words with her digimon companion, but she didn’t really give the impression that her world was a place of hardened warriors. He didn’t see her any less for it, but it would be hard for the fire digimon to comprehend such a world. Even servicemon in the digital world could pack a serious punch.
“Considering you know the way to leave for your world, I’m surprised you and your Impmon companion would have stayed together for so long, considering your mutual problems with the other.” He shook his head and gave a chortle of bewilderment, “How in the digital world did you two cross paths in the first place, anyways?”

"She made me lose a bet," Damion said. "I bet this Starmon a thousand bits plus a clean slate that I could stay on a Monochromon longer than he could. And if it wasn't for this punk and some other human distracting me and making me fall four seconds early, I would have won. Now I owe that asshole money, AND if he sees me again he's gonna try and throw me in hail. All for some stupid little fire. The explosion wasn't my fault."
Katrin sighed. "And this is how I was welcomed to this place my first day. With a rude, trouble-making, pyromaniac. All I wanted was to get away from the ghosts in the city, so I took a weird train and ended up here."

“How does that Starmon plan to make the money owed to him off of you if you’re rotting in a jail cell?” The Meramon asked, perplexed, thinking this law-enforcement digimon of some sort wasn’t the sharpest nail in the batch, especially since he made a monetary bet with someone before finding out if that someone could back up their stakes. This curiosity quickly subsided as he registered the rest of the Impmon’s words, “Wait, explosion?”
He turned his attention away from the little viral imp for a moment to once again face the human, “Well, your greeting party could have been considerably worse than an Impmon. If you stay here long enough, you might figure that out on your own, though hopefully not in person. At least I don’t think you’ll be seeing too many of these ghosts from your world around here. Spirits like those made by the ancient warriors aren’t common in this world.”

"Community service," Damion muttered. "And yeah, explosion. Apparently somebody left something really, really flammable nearby and my fire just happened to reach it. An innocent mistake."
Katrin rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure. And I have seen a seen the spirit of an ancient warrior once. A Lowemon, I think. Apparently this one guy and transform into him."

“But community service isn’t a paying venture,” Meramon pointed out, “though if this Starmon really wants to get something out of you, I suppose he could make you pay off your debt with hours rather than bits.” Next, he considered the Impmon’s explanation of the explosion, “Right,” he answered doubtfully to virus-type’s confession of innocence, “you know, I can’t turn my fire off and yet I’ve never managed to actually cause an explosion in town.” His blue-white eyes narrowed in consideration, before lightening up a little, “Maybe all this situation calls for is some care and attention next time.”
The human female’s words pulled his attention away from the mischievous little imp in an instant, “A human with the spirit of an ancient warrior? That hasn’t happened before in some time. I wonder why the spirits would be inhabiting again.” The thought worried him slightly, but he put his mind at ease. There was no cause for alarm just because people were turning into digimon and he shouldn’t concern himself until there was a reason for it.

"I doubt that anything Damion does is close to innocent," Katrin said with a sigh. "Seems like a real troublemaker to me."
"Hey, I just have a sense of fun," the Impmon said. "But if it really bothers you so, then I'll tell ya what....I don't care!"
